What's in the kit

Six essential tools. One convenient recovery kit.

Each piece is chosen and tested for one job: helping you do everyday things — socks, shoes, showers, dropped keys — without bending past your hip precautions.

Folding Reacher

Aluminum body, rotating rubber jaw, magnetic tip — rated to pick up everything from a dime to a 5-lb jug. Clips to your walker.

Sock Aid

Smooth flocked edges that work with compression socks — no snags, no bending.

24" Shoehorn

Long-handle metal core — put shoes on standing tall, not doubled over.

Leg Lifter

Rigid strap that moves your leg into bed or the car — stitched to hold 75 lb, tested every batch.

Long-Handle Bath Sponge

Wash your back and feet in the shower without twisting or bending.

Dressing Stick

Pull on pants and shirts without bending — with a hook that's molded in, not glued on.

Why On The Mend

We studied more than 1,000 customer reviews of existing recovery kits — and found the same problems, again and again.

We make one kit, and we make it obsessively well. Every tool tested, every failure point studied, nothing padded in to make the box look bigger. That focus is the product.

The reacher that doesn't snap

The most common complaint in the category: the grabber breaks in week one — right when it's needed most. Ours uses a metal mechanism, cycle-tested before every shipment, and it's the only one in its class backed for a full 18 months.

Clips to the walker

Physical-therapy clinics use tools that hang on the walker frame. Most retail kits skip it. We didn’t.

Made for the people who love them

Most kits are purchased by a son or daughter before Mom comes home. Every kit includes a plain-English quick-start guide and our Recovery Checklist — so the whole family knows how each tool helps.

Who this is for

Made for recoveries where bending and reaching are the hard part

Preparing for hip replacement

Adults getting ready for surgery who want the house set up before they come home.

Sons & daughters helping a parent

The most common buyer: a family member making sure Mom or Dad recovers safely and comfortably.

Caregivers organizing the home

Getting everything in place before hospital discharge day.

Anyone with limited bending or reach

Arthritis, back conditions, or everyday mobility limits — the same tools help year-round.

Also well suited to knee replacement recovery and back surgery recovery, where care teams commonly restrict bending — the reacher, sock aid, and dressing tools do the same job. As always, follow your own care team’s specific precautions.

Timing

When should I order my recovery kit?

Ideally, have the kit at home before surgery. That gives you time to unpack the tools, read the instructions, and practice using them — so day one back home already feels familiar.

Many families order two to three weeks before the scheduled procedure.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

When should I order the kit?

Before surgery, if you can. Most surgeons and physical therapists recommend having your recovery tools at home and practiced with before the operation, so everything is ready the day you come home. Order at least a week ahead to be safe.

What exactly is included?

The Standard Kit includes six tools: a folding reacher/grabber, sock aid, 24" long-handle shoehorn, leg lifter strap, long-handle bath sponge, and dressing stick. The Deluxe Kit adds an XL hip ice wrap and a set of recovery resistance bands. Every kit also includes a plain-English quick-start guide.

How do these tools help after hip surgery?

After hip replacement, most care teams restrict bending past 90 degrees for several weeks. Every tool in the kit exists to help you dress, bathe, reach, and move your leg without bending past that point — so you can follow your surgeon's precautions while staying independent. Always follow your own care team's specific instructions.

Does it work for knee replacement recovery too?

Yes — and this surprises people. The bending and reaching limits after knee replacement are the same ones this kit is built for, so the tools do double duty: the leg lifter is a particular favorite of knee patients for getting in and out of bed and the car, and the reacher, sock aid, and dressing stick work exactly the same way. Many of our customers are knee patients.

Will the sock aid work with compression socks?

Yes — this matters, and it’s where many kits fall short. Our sock aid has smooth, flocked edges and a wider contour specifically tested with 15-20 mmHg compression socks as well as everyday socks.

How much weight can the reacher and leg lifter handle?

The reacher is rated to lift 5 lb — from a dropped coin to a full 2-liter bottle — and every production batch is cycle-tested. The leg lifter strap is stitched and pull-tested to hold 75 lb. Both are covered by our 18-month warranty.

Is this covered by insurance, Medicare, or FSA/HSA?

Daily-living aids like these are typically not covered by Medicare, but many customers successfully use FSA or HSA funds for them. Eligibility depends on your plan — we suggest checking with your plan administrator, and we're happy to provide an itemized receipt.

What if it arrives after surgery, or we don't need it?

30-day money-back guarantee, no interrogation. If the reacher fails in the first 18 months — or any other tool in its warranty period — we replace it free — including the reacher, the part that fails most often in this category.

How do I clean and care for the tools?

Wipe the reacher, shoehorn, dressing stick, and sock aid shell with a damp cloth. Hang the bath sponge to dry after use and replace the head every 2-3 months. The leg lifter and sock aid terry surfaces can be hand-washed and air-dried.

Our story

A Texas family business, 20+ years strong

On The Mend builds tools that help people recover and live independently. It started after watching too many families scramble — and too many flimsy products fail — in the fragile first weeks after surgery. We believed recovering with dignity shouldn’t depend on a $2 plastic grabber.

We're a brand of Compassion Consulting and Distribution, a Texas company serving customers since 2004. We test what we sell, we answer our phone, and we stand behind every kit.
